outside in

Sometimes a change of perspective is just what I need to figure out the next step in a painting I’m working on. A few weeks ago I was hitting dead ends. It was still so cold here in Toronto so I bundled up, got a hot coffee and spent two hours doodling on the beach. It’s good practice to be relaxed and having fun so that ideas can flow. I tend to forget that from time to time.
I am also constantly unlearning that every second of my day does not have to be directly productive. I find that when I just go with the flow, I have more break throughs. These new paintings that I am working on require slow methodical thought, patience and risk taking. But they also require me to be relaxed, open and spontaneous.
